What is Stand Up and Cook

Well well well look at the thyme. Cooking can be difficult. Cooking with a Comedian will add a little spice into the process. We are offering laughs along with tasty food. Our goal with this event is to give a tasty cooking class with commentary provided by the Comedian. We have simple yet super tasty Vietnamese recipes that will keep our participants engaged and invested. But, even the simplest of recipes can have their complicated moments. But romain calm! Our comedian will shine and keep the audience engaged and lighthearted. This takes an event from being good to being great! So lettuce celebrate! Who are we?

We are a group of 6 women in our final semester at the George Brown College Event Management Program. For our capstone project we want to put on an event that plays to our passions and empowers women. We want to combine education with entertainment and that is how we came up with Stand Up and Cook - an interactive cooking class with a comedian as the proxy for our attendees.

Empowering Women

We are an all-female group and very passionate about lifting up women. This is a not-for-profit event where all of our proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Women's Foundation in honour of Women's day, on March 8th.

Starring Taste-Toronto's Vicky Tran

Vicky Tran is a Toronto based Culinary professional specializing in recipe development, food styling and food photography. With 15+ years previously working in the local restaurant and catering industry she has amassed an ability to develop recipes in a wide range of global cuisines, but her heart will always lie with her native Vietnamese. She currently works as a freelance creator for clients such as TasteToronto as well as Ensembl Cookware. Her passion will always lie in food and how to capture and create visually compelling images but she finds the most gratification in being able to teach others how to cook for themselves and awakening a love for creating a communal dining experience that they may not have known existed.

Starring Janice Israeloff

Janice is a stand up comic/actor and playwright. Her 7 person shows have taken her across Canada to rave reviews. She has performed to sold out crowds at Yuk Yuks Toronto, Absolute Comedy, Comedy Bar and clubs across Ontario. Janice is a winner of the Harvey Atkins Comedy Competition and has been in numerous commercials, web series, and independent films. You can often find her popping up on someone's much younger Instagram feed, in a YouTube video, or web series. She usually plays moms or mean HR ladies or care givers. She performs every night somewhere in Toronto at Bars and comedy venues or at Corporate Events and private functions. By day Janice works in a Long Term Care facility and her humor comes from her life experiences. She is the mom of 2 millennials and a Gen Z and has 3 cats and a husband of 35 years. During the pandemic Janice performed online in Europe, Canada, U.S. and is a regular at The Unknown Comedy Club, an online comedy club. She also produced shows in her backyard on her deck called Cucumber Comedy. She will be hosting an album taping in June.

The grocery list

  • 3 tablespoons Fish sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Light soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 200 grams Dried mung bean vermicelli noodles
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 250 grams Extra firm or pressed tofu, diced into ½ inch cubes
  • 2 Shallots, sliced
  • 4 cups Mushrooms (cremini, king oyster, shiitake, beech, oyster, enoki etc.) cleaned
  • 1 cup Sliced Scallions
  • 1 cup Vegetable broth
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste

Optional Garnishes

  • Handful of cilantro, leaves and tender stems
  • Crispy fried onions or shallots
  • Lime wedges
